What Is an HS Code? HS Code Meaning Explained
An HS code, short for Harmonized System code, is a standardized numerical method of classifying traded products. It is used by customs authorities around the world to identify what a product is, apply the correct tariff rates, and collect trade statistics.
The Harmonized System was developed and is maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). It is updated every five years, with the current edition covering roughly 5,300 six-digit product codes grouped into 21 sections and 97 chapters.
The first 6 digits of an HS code are the same in almost every country. Countries may extend the code beyond 6 digits to suit their own tariff needs — for example, the United States uses 10-digit HTS codes.
When you ship goods internationally, the HS code on your commercial invoice determines the duty rate, whether special trade agreements apply, and how your shipment is handled by customs. Using the wrong code can lead to delays, penalties, or overpaid duties.
